Small Town Life big City Culture

Area residents have long appreciated the dual pleasures of having the arts and cultures of New York City practically at their doorstep, along with cultural amenities that are the envy of much larger communities.

Then:

  • D.W. Griffith, famous director of silent films, produced "The Birth of a Nation" in his studios on Edgewater Point in Mamaroneck.
  • Famous early residents of Larchmont and Mamaroneck: the Barrymores, Lillian Gish, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Vernon and Irene Castle.
  • In the Ragtime Era, impresario Edward Albee brought his vaudeville acts to the little summer theater at the Larchmont Yacht Club.
  • During the Roaring Twenties, composer and lyricist Vincent Yeomanns wrote the Broadway hit "No, No, Nannette" at his home in Larchmont.

Now:

  • The Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck provides year-round professional entertainment, from programs for children to jazz, ballet, chamber music and opera, as well as a repertory company.
  • The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Summer Theater, a six-week workshop for high school and college students, is sponsored and funded by the Town of Mamaroneck and run by a professional staff.
  • Both communities offer outstanding libraries, lecture series, art exhibits, private dancing schools, and some of the finest liturgical music in Westchester.
