Larchmont and Mamaroneck
Where the fresh water meets the saltwater.r

Take a tour of our community

Tucked into the rolling hills of southern Westchester, along the Long Island Sound, are the communities of Larchmont and Mamaroneck.

Like other mature New York suburbs, they have winding, tree lined residential streets, homes of many vintages, excellent schools, abundant shopping and a convenient commute.

But unlike other suburbs, Larchmont and Mamaroneck have something quite special: a combined shoreline stretching twelve and a half miles, with more than 323 acres of parkland, marinas and beaches. A tribe of the Mohican Indians were the first to live upon this land. They called it Mamaroneck - "where the fresh water meets the salt water," the place where the Mamaroneck River pours over a waterfall into the Sound.

Larchmont today is comprised of an Incorporated Village of approximately one square mile, and an Unincorporated Area of two and a half square miles, a region that at the time of incorporation was too sparsely populated to be included in the Village. Today, there are approximately 18,000 people living in the two areas.

Mamaroneck is considerably older than Larchmont, with a written history dating back to 1661. Originally a fishing village, Mamaroneck was built around a lovely sheltered cove, now ringed with Japanese cherry trees. Its harbor is a beehive of activity, where commercial craft mingle with sleek private yachts. The community that grew up around the cove was settled by farmers, fishermen, and seafarers. As time went by, the busy waterfront and picturesque homes of Mamaroneck also began to attract members of the local gentry. Today the village occupies 3.5 square miles and is home to approximately 18,000 residents. Its historical heterogeneity continues to appeal to people from all walks of life, who happily share the pleasures of seaside living in Mamaroneck, and its dedication to the preservation of both natural and architectural beauty.
